An alight car in Welwyn Garden City was cordoned off as police forensic officers investigated last night.

Police were called by the fire service to reports of a vehicle fire in Heronswood Road at 10.45pm yesterday (August 15).

Officers initially attended due to the circumstances around how the fire started being unclear to the fire service.

A police spokeswoman said: “However, following a fire and forensic investigation it has been established that the fire was not started deliberately and was caused by a mechanical fault within the vehicle.

“We did have a number of police vehicles attend due to the circumstances surrounding the fire and the enquires we need to conduct to establish whether it was deliberate.

“The vehicle was cordoned off to preserve any potential evidence for SOCO officers.”
