A flytip of gargantuan proportions has appeared in picturesque woods belonging to Brocket Hall on the outskirts of Welwyn Garden City.

Walkers and passers-by were shocked at the scale of materials that have been dumped there in the last week.

The woodland has a public right of way and is a favourite with local walkers.

Entering the path, bags of rubbish and dirty toilet paper litter the area, but it’s nothing compared to further in where numerous piles of building refuse are dumped amongst the trees in an area at least the size of an acre.

Michael Longshaw, director of Brocket Hall, estimates the cost of cleaning it up will be at least £10,000.

“They pushed down the fence and dumped their rubbish,” he said.

He says the flytippers had been steadily dumping materials since Monday, June 11.

He told the Welwyn Hatfield Times: “I believe they should be prosecuted.”

One walker said: “It’s just jaw-dropping.

“It’s unbelievable. I have never seen anything like it.

“It’s such a shame to see what is usually a very pretty spot just covered in rubbish.”

One walker from Wheathampstead was combing through the mounds of rubbish today for discarded electrical cables.

Another passerby, who had parked in the Marford Road layby for his coffee break, said: “I reckon there’s 200 tons of rubbish here.”

Another person using the path on Tuesday, June 19, said he had seen tipper trucks knocking over the wire fence and driving into the wood.

Travellers had occupied the layby on the road between Welwyn Garden City and Wheathampstead for several days before a court order to leave was made on June 21.

There was no sign of the travellers today (June 22).

The passerby who had parked nearby added: “I just can’t believe how people get away with it.

“I blame those who actually employ the flytippers.

“What they [the flytippers] do, no one does anything about it.”

A dog walker had driven down to see if it was still safe to take his pet there.

“It’s madness,” he said.

“It’s dangerous for animals as well.”

He added that he had moved to the area for the green surroundings.

“I might as well go back to South London,” he said.

The Environment Agency has told Mr Longshaw that the flytippers are a known group, that the organisation is tracking.

The Grade I listed stately home of Brocket Hall, situated on grounds next to the wood, was built in 1768 and includes a golf course, a £195-a-night hotel and a 2 AA Rosette lakeside restaurant.

The hall pays £340,000 a year in business rates and pays a private contractor to remove its commercial waste.
