"This is a Garden City, so it would be the jewel in the crown to have a beautiful floral clock which we could all be proud of."

Dr Dennis Lewis

Former borough councillor Dr Dennis Lewis, who has played an instrumental role in organising WGC’s 90th birthday festivities, believes that a floral clock would be a great way of marking the town’s century.

And, with time-honoured community spirit, he’s asking residents to suggest where the timepiece should be placed.

Dr Lewis told the Welwyn Hatfield Times how the idea came about.

He said: “When I called the first meeting of interested parties, everybody agreed that, while organising the 90th, we should also keep an eye on the centenary.

“This is a Garden City, so it would be the jewel in the crown to have a beautiful floral clock which we could all be proud of.

“It would be a tremendous asset to the town; it’s our 2020 vision.”

The 81-year-old said there were numerous examples of towns and cities introducing such clocks.

“They have a magnificent one in Edinburgh and they are certainly keen on them in the rest of Europe,” he said.

Dr Lewis also wants to set up a public fund to collect the minimum £50,000 cash required to buy the clock and hopes that the council will be able to contribute to it regularly over the next decade.

If you would like to suggest where the clock should be placed, call Dr Lewis on 01707 324048 or email dennis.lewis@tiscali.co.uk

  • A clock paid for by the Council is a bit "Cuckoo" if you ask me. If some of the companies in WelwynHatfield would like to make adonation of the total cost AND running costs, good for them - come on Tesco, Roche & John Lewis and the like, do you bit for the area out of your substantial profits.

  • Spending reviews, cutting of services for the elderly and council wide cuts are ALL forecast. Two questions here. Why celebrate the 90th anniversary anyway ? We celebrated the 75th in a pointless and extravagant way just 15 years ago... and Secondly... Really...A floral clock in ten years time ? or essential care services for the towns less prosperous elderly and infirm now as winter approaches ? Make your choice Dennis.

  • at this moment of time in welwyn garden city we cannot afford to waste money on this project im afraid. as this council is cutting jobs and going for fortnightly refuse collections.also douglas tilbe centre is shutting down because of these cuts that the tories and council are bringing in. im sorry but old age pensioners and meals on wheels are a priority over a clock, where will it go again most likely to privetise meals on wheels private companies will charge more and some will not be able to afford it.what happens to youth clubs if theres any kids on the streets again.sorry but this council needs to get it right first time, stop dreaming of a fantastic garden city even hatfied needs rebuilding first, more houses for the people of welwyn garden city before a CLOCK.
