Firefighters were given the go-ahead to break into a car to rescue a dog that was left alone in Hatfield.

The dog had been left by itself in a car parked at Oldings Corner Retail Park off Comet Way.

Herts Fire and Rescue, which rescued the dog at 2.51pm today (July 12), tweeted that it had reportedly been there since 8.30am.

Police were called at 2.39pm and gave permission to the firefighters to break in.

Just as they were attempting to break in, the owner was located.

The poor pooch was found to be safe and well.

Herts Fire and Rescue said in their tweet: “PLEASE DO NOT LEAVE ANIMALS INSIDE CARS!”

People who leave dogs in hot cars can be prosecuted for causing unnecessary suffering to an animal under the Animal Welfare Act, which carries a maximum penalty of six months in prison and a £5,000 fine.

A spokesperson for the police said: “It is important to consider how hot it can get inside your vehicle and how quickly temperatures can reach deadly levels for your dog.

“It is crucial that you do not leave your dog in your parked vehicle during warm weather.

“Even leaving the windows slightly open or parking in the shade will not be sufficient to keep your pet cool and safe.”
