The roof tiles contained chrysotile (white asbestos), which poses the lowest health risk.

Strict Health and Safety Executive guidance is being followed to ensure it is cleared safely, Welwyn Hatfield Council has confirmed.

The work will start on site as soon as possible next week.

Councillor Duncan Bell, executive member for resources, said: “We’ve liaised closely with the emergency services and Hertfordshire Building Control since the fire to ensure the site is as safe and secure as possible.

“Fires containing asbestos materials are not uncommon and I would like to reassure everyone that we are following the right procedures to ensure the public are not put at risk.

“We are absolutely shocked and saddened to see the building completely destroyed and will be assisting the ongoing police investigation wherever we can.”
