A REPLICA of Venice or a set for a warzone should be built on the Broadwater Road site to bring the film industry back to the area.
A "mini Venice" and a war-zone film set are among Jenny Begg's ideas for the Broadwater Road site in WGCThat’s the idea from one WGC resident, who has even written to Pinewood Studios to invite them to take a look.
Jenny Begg, 60, came up with the fun idea after reading of Pinewood’s plans being turned down for a site in Buckinghamshire which would have seen replica cities built, which would have been occupied when not used for filming.
Mrs Begg’s letter read: “I was sorry to read in the papers a town in Buckinghamshire had rejected your planning application to build a replica of Venice.”
The Beehive resident then went on to explain the benefits of the Tesco-owned site in WGC.
She added: “The site once had historic film studios but this, along with other industrial buildings, was demolished leaving a large, derelict, level site perfect for war scenes or gangland car chases.
“There are also two dilapidated factory buildings, one in the art deco style with stylish tiled exterior and a huge grain silo could provide a stunning and terrifying high dive stunt scene.
“Access to the site is possible by road, rail and atmospheric rusting hulk of a pedestrians’ bridge to the town centre.
“Can I suggest that you contact the planning office at Welwyn Hatfield for further details as perhaps they would be keen to support a development which fits the original ethos of our proud town.”
She told the WHT: “I’m still waiting for a reply.”
And Mrs Begg added she would love to hear of other people’s ideas for the land.
“I think it would be great,” she said.
“We need some more fun in this, it’s all been too serious, let’s stop trying to cut each other’s throats.”

What WGC needs is affordable housing, a decent shopping area and small retail outlets that would benefit everyone, not just the well off tenants of WGC. We have 6,000 households in fuel poverty, and a decent leisure and retail would help the economy of WGC. Shops are shutting at an alarming rate, so we need to regenerate WGC before it is too late. Everyone would win, we keep hearing that people need exercise and a healthier lifestlye. A swimming pool and fitness centre packaged in the right way would be a big boost to WGC. What would a film set bring to WGC, the roads would still need to be improved, would the film studio re-inforce the Railway Bridge, or the Silos, Somehow I don't think so. , let's look at the bigger picture?????

Hey, stop trying to steal ideas from us Hatfield residents! We've got our very own town centre ready for any end-of-the-world zombie flick, complete with all the zombie extras you could need (no need to even tell some of them that they're going to be in a movie). Venture over to the business park and Salisbury Village and all the dumped rubbish and mess will suit any disaster movie theme. Then you've got the Parkhouse bus station that is virtually empty and full of weeds. Stick to trying to get your Tesco and leave us come up with the film locations!!

Mrs B... You don't have to live next door to it! I'm still after a Tesco and a swimming pool, but, hey, ASDA would be OK...

How about a supermarket that would bring much needed competition to the area and provide local services for local people and employment...o hang on...

I think this idea is most crazy plan yet for Broadwater Road, any film company will bring in thier own people and can you realy see this getting past the wgc police(sorry wgc.soc). Stupid idea we need lesuire,Retail,Small workshops,Studios, etc, I am sure that if a smaller version of what Tesco wanted was to be submitted now that the people of wgc know that shops shutting was just a ploy by wgc.soc,it would be embraced by the planners and comunity.
