A Welwyn Garden City family was left horrified after finding caterpillars in broccoli that was bought from a supermarket in the town.
The father, who wished to remain unnamed, told the WHT that he had finished his portion of Aldi’s broccoli when his wife spotted the dead creepy-crawlies midway through her meal.
“We were distressed, my stepdaughter was beside herself,” he said. “She was screaming and crying as she has a phobia of bugs – and trust me it is hard enough to get my stepdaughter to eat vegetables as it is.
“My missus was heaving and I just felt rank.”
He said the broccoli was totally sealed when bought, and was boiled two days later.
He added there was “no chance” they snuck in after being purchased, but after reporting it to the supermarket he said he was only offered a £10 voucher.
An Aldi spokesman told the Welwyn Hatfield Times: “Incidents like this can happen with products that are grown outdoors in natural conditions.
“We have apologised to the customer and made our supplier aware of this matter.”
