Tesco, the car park and surrounding roads were evacuated this morning after a suspected suspicious device was found inside the Hatfield store.

Police were called at 12.02am today to Tesco in Great North Road, Hatfield, to reports of a suspected suspicious device inside the store.

A police spokeswoman said: “The store and car park was evacuated and as a precaution a 100 metre cordon was put in place.

“Explosive Ordnance Disposal experts (EOD) attended and carried out a controlled explosion.

“Enquiries are on-going to establish the nature of the device.”

Road closures into the Oldings Corner Retail Park have now been lifted.

The store reopened at 8.30am.

A Tesco spokesperson said: “We can confirm that an incident took place in our Hatfield store overnight which was attended by the police.

“We are assisting the police with their enquiries and our store is open for customers as normal.”
