The nationwide event is a celebration of authors, illustrators and books, and aims to help encourage children to explore the pleasure of reading.

Headteacher Mary Westley said: “It’s fantastic because we nearly had to close the school because of the weather, but everyone came in because it’s World Book Day.

“So there was a fantastic atmosphere, everyone was really excited and there were some stunning outfits.

“All of the children and staff dressed up, including all the office staff, who came as characters from Peter Pan, and no one knew they were doing it.”

She also emphasised the importance of World Book Day, adding that seeing teachers dress up has helped bring the children’s favourite literature to life.

“Children need to read more than ever before because of technology,” Ms Westley continued. “Get their heads off the screens and in to a book.

“It takes you into another world if you read a book – it’s wonderful.”
