D-Day has been revealed for an aviation enthusiast’s plans to open a community airfield at the former Hatfield Aeordrome site.

Colin Fitch submitted plans for a runway and associated facilities in Ellenbrook Fields after doubts emerged over having a relocated runway in Panshanger.

The decision date will be September 20, he told the WHT, but Mr Fitch revealed that after talking to councillors, he thinks it may not be accepted first time.

However, the flying fanatic said he is “very optimistic” it will eventually be successful – even if he needs to appeal.

The application has sparked a mixed response on the council’s website, although the majority of residents’ responses are favourable.

If approved, the grass runway would be a total length of 1,290m.

There would also be two 20m by 15m hangars, a 30m by 10m clubhouse, 50-vehicle car park and a community viewing and picnic area.
