The Beds, Cambs and Herts Dog Unit is looking for people to foster adorable police puppies in a new scheme.

The puppy fostering scheme calls on dog lovers to look after police dog puppies as young as eight weeks old.

The German shepherd puppies will be a part of the family until they are ready to begin police training, at which point they would go to live with their handler.

The team will work with volunteers, offering support and guidance throughout the duration of the fostering. They will also be assisted in implementing a training programme for their fluffy companions.

The dog unit will also provide the essentials you need to look after your temporary puppy, including a suitable crate/kennel, food and any veterinary treatment.

Sergeant Cray Birch said: “This is a unique opportunity to assist our team in bringing up the next generation of crime fighting canines.

“It is quite a large commitment, as the dogs will need regular attention, stimulation and training, but we will be working closely with the fosterers at all times and create a training schedule.

“We believe this will be a really rewarding scheme and are eager to hear from anyone who believes they have the time to foster one of our police dog puppies.”

Those interested in becoming a police dog puppy fosterer should email the dog unit at bchdogtraining@bedfordshire.pnn.police.uk, and ensure you include your name, date of birth, address and contact details – and note that fostering positions require security vetting.

Following this, applications forms will be sent to those interested.
