THE builders of the revamped Sainsbury’s store in WGC have won a prestigious award.
Bowmer & Kirkland was commended for “delivering the highest levels of consideration during the construction” of the town centre supermarket, and landed the Gold Award from the Considerate Constructors Scheme.
The annual awards recognise the highest levels of consideration and care shown by construction sites throughout the UK towards their local neighbourhood and the general public, site staff and the environment.
Only 88 UK sites achieved the gold standard this year from more than 8,500, making this award particularly significant.
The close proximity of residential and commercial premises needed thoughtful and detailed attention to neighbours of the site.
A visitors centre and heated viewing area were open during site hours.
Stephen Ratcliffe, director of the UK Contractors Group, said: “I congratulate all the winners of the 2012 National Site Awards.
“You all showcase the UK industry at its very best.
“This is a year when British construction will be on display to the whole world as we celebrate the 2012 Olympics, and we have every reason to be very proud of our achievements.”

I suppose the builders built what they were told to do, and I'll agree they did do it with minimal disruption - but someone chose the poor materials (which the contractors said before the store opened weren't fit for purpose), not building to the original plans (oops, we made the shop bigger than we should!) and that stupid 'living' wall (should be dead wall) with water dripping down on the heads of passing pedestrians (which froze during the cold spell, making it dangerous) etc. I hope there's no subsequent award to Sainsbury's or the architects!
