SIX cyclists from Welwyn Garden City have raised more than £8,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support by cycling coast to coast across England.
Team member Barry Waddilove said: “A few years ago some of us started cycling for fun – more as a way to get from one pub to another than for fitness.
“By 2011 we were looking for a slightly bigger challenge and found out about ‘The Way of the Roses’ from their website.
“Preparations began with a few longer rides and this year we cycled the route from west coast to east coast in the UK – 170 miles from Morecambe to Bridlington – to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.”
The sextet decided to do the ride for Macmillan Cancer Support and initially hoped to raise £2,000.
He added: “We thought we would be hard pressed to raise the £2,000 but people have been fantastically generous.
“I am absolutely thrilled that we have been able to raise over £8,000.
“Macmillan nurses helped my family to cope throughout my sister’s lengthy fight with cancer.
“They provide excellent advice and support – before, during and after treatment.
“We are all really happy to have raised so much for the charity.”
The six who cycled for charity were: Cliff Bonnett, Martin Bontoft, Colin Connolly, Paul Durbin, Jamie Keenan and Barry Waddilove.
The charity’s Kerry Briars said: “This is a fantastic amount of money to have raised and everyone that helped to raise the funds should be really pleased with themselves.
“If you would like to raise funds for Macmillan then please do get in touch on 01438 712012.”
