Hertfordshire Police has explained the unusual crime figures on its website

Herts Police has explained why according to its latest figures there were only five crimes reported in Welwyn Garden City during June this year.

According to the official statistics currently on the police website, there were also only eight crimes reported in Hatfield and two in Potters Bar.

However, a message on the data police website states: “Due to a change in IT systems no crime or outcome data is available for June 2018. The force will rectify this issue and provide the missing data over the coming months.”

A Herts Police spokesman said the IT overhaul will eventually produce better quality statistics, but the significant change has “caused concern” over accuracy.

He added: “The public should be reassured that if they report a crime it is being investigated as normal. We apologise for the situation and are working to resolve it as soon as possible.”
