A bungling would-be thief tried to take a bike in Welwyn Garden City - but didn’t realise he was on camera.

Police are investigating the attempted theft of a bike on Monday, May 28 between 10.00am and 10.30am in the front drive of an address in Great Ganett.

Security cameras show a man walking by the property, glancing at the bike, and then returning to make his attempt.

He can be seen keeping a watchful eye over the street and then heading into the driveway.

The bike, which was attached using a D-lock to a low wall, came away easily - as did a large chunk of the wall.

The hapless would-be thief quickly decided against his endeavour and ran off.

The bike’s owner told the Welwyn Hatfield Times that it is not worth much, but it has sentimental value to him as he bought it in 1999.

Police have asked anyone who saw the incident or has any information to contact them on the non-emergency number 101, quoting crime reference 41/1751/18.
