Construction work on a new Aldi store in Welwyn Garden City is due to begin next month.
Eager shoppers have been wondering whether the store would still be going ahead after planning permission was granted nearly a year ago.
Whitwell resident Derek Graham, 73, said: “I can’t wait for Aldi to open to give Sainsbury’s and Waitrose a bit of competition, but we have heard nothing more about it since the council approved the planning application.
“Tens of people I have spoken to say ‘It has been given permission. Where is it?’.”
An Aldi spokesman told the Welwyn Hatfield Times today: “Construction of our new store at Welwyn Garden City is due to start next month.
“We hope to open the store in spring 2018, creating up to 50 new jobs and allowing residents to shop and save closer to home.”
Aldi was given planning permission in September last year to build a store on the east side of Bessemer Road, to the north of the Bakehouse pub.
The store will have 106 customer car parking spaces.
