A motorcyclist has been left seriously injured following a crash on the A1(M) on the southbound carriageway just after the Hatfield Tunnel.

Police were called at 3.16pm to Junction 4 just after the Hatfield Tunnel yesterday.

The southbound carriageway was closed and then the northbound was also closed at 3.31pm to enable the air ambulance to land.

The rider of a white BMW motorbike, believed to be in his thirties, was flown to the Royal London Hospital with serious injuries.

The crash had also involved a silver VW Passat.

The road was reopened just before 8.45pm.

An ambulance service spokesman said: “We received a call yesterday at 3.16pm to reports of a road traffic collision on the A1(M) to which we sent an ambulance crew and air ambulance from the Essex and Herts Air Ambulance Trust (EHAAT).

“Medics treated a man, believed to be in his 30s, for a serious leg injury before air lifting him to the Royal London Hospital for further care.

“He is believed to be in a serious condition.”
