A 40ft tree collapsed and crashed into a Welwyn Garden City man’s summer house – despite him previously warning the borough council about its safety.

The tree landed on John Cole's summer house. The tree landed on John Cole's summer house.

Daniells resident John Cole, 63, came home to discover the tree splayed out in his garden, damaging the summer house and part of his neighbour’s property.

It comes after the father-of-one voiced concerns to Welwyn Hatfield Council a few years early about the size of trees on nearby Black Fan Road.

Mr Cole said: “I’m furious because if I had been out there working and that tree had landed on me it would have killed me.

“It’s also damaged some part of next door.”

He added: “I’m annoyed because I see the council planting lots of trees around Welwyn Garden City but it is not managing the trees that it has already got.

“I’m waiting for the council to ring me back and say they are going to do something about it.

“It’s their tree, their responsibility. I’m not incurring costs for it.”
