Four people have sustained serious injuries after a BMW and a Toyota crashed in Welwyn Garden City.

The incident took place at around 9.20pm on Saturday (August 12) in Ascots Lane.

A grey BMW and a grey Toyota collided "for reasons unknown at this time".

The occupants of the Toyota - one driver and two passengers - were hospitalised with serious injuries.

The driver of the BMW also suffered serious injuries and was taken to hospital, while the car's passenger was unharmed.

Sergeant Timothy Davies said: "Our enquiries are continuing at this time to establish the circumstances around the collision.

“Were you in the area at the time?

"Did you witness the collision itself?

"I’m particularly keen to hear from anyone who captured dash cam footage.
