MUSICAL Annie is coming to a Welwyn Garden City theatre, with RARE Productions holding auditions in Hatfield next week.

The largest producer of youth musical theatre in the UK is holding open auditions for eight to 21-year-olds for its forthcoming production of the enduringly popular musical.

Andy Burton, of the London Colney-based theatre company, said: “We know that young people will relish the chance to perform in this major musical at the well-appointed Hawthorne Theatre and we are really pleased to be giving them this opportunity.”

The auditions take place on Wednesday, June 20, at St Philip Howard School in Hatfield from 4.30pm to 6.30pm, and on Saturday, June 23 at Campus West, WGC, from 2pm to 5pm.

Youngsters aged 12 and under should attend in the earlier part of the auditions, and those aged 13 to 21 should for the final hour.

The musical is based on the strip cartoon Little Orphan Annie and tells the story of Annie, who lives at the orphanage run by the sadistic Miss Hannigan, and her quest to find her parents.

The original show opened on Broadway in 1977 and a major revival in 1998 featured Lily Savage – the alter ego of TV host Paul O’Grady – in the role of Miss Hannigan.
