RESIDENTS in Welwyn Hatfield are being warned about a potential council tax scam.

The borough council is advising anyone who has received a letter about possible council tax rebate that they do not need to pay third party agencies to investigate such claims.

A spokeswoman said: “An organisation has targeted certain borough households telling them that they could be entitled to a refund as their home might be in the wrong council tax band.

“Residents, occupiers and owners have the right to challenge the band of their property.

“But they do not need to employ an agency to act on their behalf.”

Revaluation of council tax bands was free if submitted directly to the Valuation Office Agency (VOA).
