The now 19-year-old has spent the last two years living in Australia where he studied and trained at the British Offshore Centre on the Gold Coast.
WHT Olympic analysis: Richard did not originally anticipate that he would be heading to the Beijing Games. His plan had been to make the London 2012 Olympic swimming team.
He'll use the experience of China to make himself a real medal hopeful in four years' time.
Richard's GB 1,500m colleague David Davies will be leading the British hopes for a medal this time around.
